Bright Mind Enrichment

The Approach(Quick Tips)

So you’re ready to have the first interaction. But how do you break the ice? The first thing to remember is that homeless people are people too. No matter how they look, no matter their gender, age, or race.

Some have just fallen on hard times. Some may be struggling with mental illness. But everyone wants to be treated with respect and dignity. Based on past experiences, many people living on the streets are cautious when strangers approach them. So during your introduction, stay six feet away from where they are sitting or standing.

When you introduce yourself, smile, be open, and keep it simple. You can say something like, “Hi, I’m Erica. I’m handing out some socks today. Would you like a pair?” And if it feels right, say you are with Street Care. If their response is cold, simply thank them and move on. If they are warm or appreciative of what you have to offer, you can engage in small talk such as “What’s your name?” or that you like what they’re wearing and please try to listen to any stories they may wish to share.

If they seem welcoming and you’re up for it, it would be great to tell them that we offer health and wellness tips and lessons and that you’d be happy to share a card printed from our website or app and to chat about it. Just remember to start off with who you are and what you’re doing.

  • Respect homeless people and their personal space.

  • Pay attention to social cues.

  • Introduce yourself and state your purpose.

  • Listen to what each individual has to say.
