It’s unlikely that you’ll run into problems while volunteering, but, to be safe, your physical safety should always be on your mind.The first thing you can do to ensure your physical safety is to avoid carrying a lot of money, beyond keeping perhaps a $10 bill in a separate pocket.

If someone you encounter asks for money, let them know you’d be happy to share a care bag. The second important thing to remember is that you should always be sure to carry your personal belongings in your front pockets. If you are carrying a purse or bag of any sort, be sure to keep it in front of you. 

Be it your keys, phone, ID, wallet, whatever it is that you have on you, check to make sure they’re in your front pockets. Back pockets are an easy target for pickpockets. They will be less likely to come near you if they don’t see any evidence of items in your back pockets. It’s also easier for you to keep track of what you have on you. Being careful is being smart
