The Sole Nationwide Platform for Aggregating and Sharing COVID Vaccine Incentives

At the height of the pandemic in 2021, COVID-19 was overwhelming the country, with thousands dying each day. The virus   has claimed over 1.2 million lives in the U.S.—roughly 1 in every 275 people (0.36%)—and millions more have been hospitalized. 2021 was an extremely difficult time. Therefore, Bright Mind created Vaccination Rewards in July of that year.

Due to vaccine hesitancy, efforts to encourage vaccination became critical at that time.

  • Vaccination incentives were offered in almost every state, with over $223,000,000 of the rewards offered.
  • Despite immense private and public investments, there was a lack of any repository to find these incentives after they were offered, whether by stores, corporations, governments, or other large entities. This made it difficult for individuals and their loved ones to track and find incentives.

Recognizing the urgency and the lack of a centralized repository, Bright Mind introduced the Vaccination Rewards app and web app/website, a one-of-a-kind platform aggregating over 300 COVID-19 vaccination incentives nationwide

Bright Mind was the only entity to accomplish this. (For example, there was  a simple nationwide online spreadsheet listing a portion of available incentives, but most of the information was removed after several days.)

Bright Mind’s platform, based on the best available studies and powered entirely by volunteers, bridged critical information gaps and, importantly, provided a relevant and highly up-to-date tool.

  • It offered “like”, “share”, and  “mapping” functions designed for ease of use, such as for young online audiences or for concerned citizens looking to help their friends.
  • To appeal the best to a skeptical audience, the tools, the design, and the language used were specifically created in a way that would avoid trying to convince anyone of anything with which they were uncomfortable. Rather, the app focused on sharing valuable rewards of people to help incentivize them to prioritize their health.
  • After launching the platform, we made dozens of short videos highlighting the incentives. We shared these almost daily on numerous platforms, including Facebook and Instagram.
By highlighting crucial incentives like paid time off and childcare assistance, we addressed the concerns of those hesitant to get vaccinated due to financial constraints or childcare issues, ensuring that this vital information was easily accessible to those who needed it most.
  • To further aid users, we implemented a color-coding system to help them quickly identify these and other different types of incentives.
Our comprehensive media outreach strategy encompasses engaging with over 1,500 major and regional media outlets, along with international outlets, to educate them about vaccination incentives and our innovative tools.
  • This media outreach strategy not only raised awareness among key important pillars of the community, particularly media and journalists, but also resulted in us securing coverage in globally renowned outlets such as CBS, ABC, Newsweek, and POLITICO and over a dozen regional newspapers.
Bright Mind’s approach to vaccine awareness reflects its unwavering commitment to wellness and education, particularly for at-risk populations. By leveraging innovative technologies and community-driven efforts, Bright Mind reached tens of millions of people during the pandemic. The platform provided:
  • An interactive map for locating incentives by area, with expiration dates and direct links.
  • A Share feature that empowered users to directly encourage hesitant friends and family to get vaccinated by forwarding personalized rewards.
  • Seamless navigation, enabling widespread access to essential vaccine-related resources.
  • A History function to view any previously viewed incentives or rewards.
  • A Like function to view all the incentives and rewards that a user has liked in one place.
  • Streamlined User Experience: Intuitive design and navigation made the app approachable for all demographics.
  • Design: We purposely avoided making the app too streamlined since we were catering to skeptical audiences.

The organization’s efforts were bolstered by a dedicated team of dozens of volunteer professionals who contributed their time, skills, and passion to get the mainframe of this emergency platform launched in roughly 12 days with no budget. From its launch in the summer of 2021 to its continued expansion week over week, the Vaccination Rewards initiative became a trusted resource on the national stage.
