If you spot signs of mental illness in a person you have approached, try engaging them in a way that puts them at ease. A quick compliment is an easy and effective way to approach this situation. Saying something simple such as, βI like that necklace,β or βThose are great shoes,β can go a long way.Β

Use your best judgment; if you think commenting on something will put the individual more at ease, go for it. You might notice that the person who is complimented is drawn out of their shell. Give them time and space to communicate. Being heard and listened to may be a rare thing for them.
