When you’re performing outreach activities, you may find, at some point, that you’ve lost your bearings. In this scenario, don’t hesitate to ask someone for directions. You may have been conditioned to never ask for directions when you’re in an unfamiliar place. You hear things like, “walk confidently, and never let on that you’re lost.” We believe this advice is misguided. In our experience, people are generally nice and more than willing to help.Â
Plus, this can give you another opportunity to interact with someone and spark their interest in performing street outreach of their own. Take a deep breath, center yourself, then don’t be afraid to ask for directions from someone who is approachable. If you are inviting and friendly, chances are they will be too. If in doubt, look for a store and ask there.
